In Search of New Horizons
All of us know Lata Mangeshkar, for her talent and dedication to Indian music. Most of us, however, do not know that there is a Hospital : Deenanth Mangeshkar Hospital (DMH), named after her father. ( Visit: www.dmhospital.org) .This hospital is a joint effort of Jnana Prabodhini Medical Trust and Mangeshkar Family to provide excellent and ethical medical service.
Patient as a center point, Holistic approach, charity and international quality & technology are the core values of this type of medical services. Deenanath Hospital has taken initial lead in establishing the "Emergency Medical Services( EMS)" in Pune and "dial 1050" service is now efficiently working in Pune. Recently DMH announced a tie-up with the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) to extend similar services to accident victims on the highways.
It has indeed been my honor and a privilege to be associated with DMH during the last four years. With the help of many friends like you, from India and USA , we have been able to introduce several modern technologies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of DMH. These technologies include the use of cardio-pulmonary and pulse oxygen monitors, infusion pumps, breast milk pumps, conventional and high frequency (HIFI) ventilators, administration of exogenous surfactant, total par-enteral nutrition (TPN) and inhalational Nitric Oxide (iNO). In addition, we have held several physician and nursing educational seminars. Thus the NICU has become a tertiary care center for state of the art neonatal intensive care, and a source of neonatal education in Pune and surrounding area.
Recently, Dr. Larry Nichter and his team of 20 from Plastico Foundation (Orange county, CA) a plastic surgery camp was held in January-February of 2005. About 100 patients, children and adults, with complex plastic surgical problems were operated during a 2 weeks. Physicians and nurses from India and USA worked together towards a common goal. The camp was a great success. Patients received almost free care from the physicians and DMH.
In November, 2005 we plan to go to yet another higher level by organizing a Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Camp. Dr. Bill Novick, cardio-thoracic surgeon, founder of International Children’s Heart Foundation (ICHF), Memphis, TN, website babyhearts.com ) and his team of 20 (physicians and nurses) will work together with the physicians and nurses at DMH. The plan is to operate on ~ 25 children with relatively complex heart disease during a 2 week period.
We have pledged to purchase airline tickets for the team and pay for their stay in India. DMH will bear most of the expenses related to hospitalization of children so that the parents will have to pay very little if any. The total budget for the ICHF team of 20 is ~ $ 55,000 (airline ticket ~ $ 1300/person, Indian Visa 60/person, Hotel in Pune IRs 2200/day and $ 2500-3000 other expenses).
We are seeking your help towards this worth cause. We believe these monies will be well spent. It will be a very good educational experience for the physicians and the nurses in Pune to work with Dr. Novick and ICHF team. The knowledge and confidence acquired by the physicians and nurses in India will allow them to provide state of the art care to children with complex cardiac diseases for many generations to come.
We hope you will donate generously towards this goal and also tell your friends.
Your donation will be tax deductible. Please make your check payable to:
